Angamedilla National Park is one of the newest national parks in Sri Lanka with an area of 7528 hectares. Originally Angammedilla was a forest reserve within the Minneriya-Girithale Sanctuary and declared mainly to protect the drainage basin of Parakrama Samudra. Angammedilla also secures habitats and wildlife of the adjacent forests. Numerous peacocks and elephants are common within the park while, inter alia, water buffalo, giant squirrels and occasional leopard also seen. A mountain range stretches across the park from Girithale after Minneriya.
