HURULU ECO PARK SAFARI

The Hurulu Forest Reserve in Sri Lanka is a thriving eco system with a variety of creatures, which was designated as a biosphere reserve in January 1977. This covers an area of 10,000 hectares. This park is an old teak plantation which has been transformed to grassland.

The forest reserve is a very important habitat of the Sri Lankan elephant. The animal is known for its migratory behaviour and does so especially in the dry season between the forests situated around the area. There are many other protected areas situated around Hurulu Forest Reserve. Ritigala strict nature reserve, Minneriya-Giritale and Mahaweli flood plains nature reserves.

During the rainy season, the Minneriya and Kaudulla tanks fill up reducing the grass lands available to the elephants. During these times, the elephants come to Hurulu Wewa for grazing on ‘elephant grass’ available abundantly in this park. The numerous small herds of Elephants that inhabit the surrounding region for most of the year gather together on the open bed of the main tank to graze, drink, bathe and socialize.

Sneak along the narrow tracks on a safari jeep, searching for the sights of majestic elephants and exclusive leopards overlooking the dense shrub forest-the ideal venue for spotting wild animals in their natural habitats. Encounter the majestic mammals up close, as well as a variety of birds and other native species. At such close distances, the elephants are indeed regal animals. Family groups stick close together, the babies constantly protected by their elders and prevented from wandering off. It’s a joy to watch those families and will be the most marvellous thing you will experience in Hurulu National Park.

As you progress into the wild, take photographs of the remarkable scenery and absorb the serenity of the tropical environment. Refrain from panicking should you get too close to elephants--noise can upset them and lead to unnecessary clashes.

Apart from that, a Hurulu Eco Park Safari can assure you a feast of sights of rusty spotted cats, star tortoise, jungles fowl, parrots and hawk, presenting all kinds of ecosystems from dense shrublands to thick forests.

A Hurulu Eco Park safari, is certainly a thrilling experience any elephant-lover can’t afford to miss if they are in Sri Lanka during the months April / May to September.
